Maine, the Union's most northerly representative on the eastern seaboard, is barely a state at all, more a drowned mountain range, its ridges and islands ripped out of the granite by glaciers. This ford-like coast is interspersed with dense forests and spectacular beaches. It is a place where America meets its past. It has attracted an a wide range of artists, thinkers and creatives seduced by it's isolation and beauty. Autumn is perfect time to visit. The days are still warm, the evenings cool and fall leaves stunning. |

The Midcoast, known as the Penobscot Bay area, is world-renowned for its picturesque landscape. This is an area steeped in history - you will find working fishing villages, some that remain largely untouched by modernity, where lobster boats head out to haul traps as the sun rises. Places where small, simple things are still the way of the life. Native American shell middens are scattered about, antique boats continue to navigate the waters and the very things that made this area unique hundreds of years ago are still at play today. Where many cherish their ties to the past and embracing the future, you will find a perfect meeting place between the old and the new. For those of you who have never seen the firery hills and islands of Maine in the fall you are in for a treat. Coastal hardwoods begin to show in late September. the hillsides are crimson yellow and orange - truely a sight to behold. Our home base will be a cozy 1920's waterfront home. This classic, historic building has spent the last century as a sail loft, ship's chandlery, store, and now as a great house. Each day rise with yoga and an organic breakfast. Afternoons will be devoted to exploring: apple orchards, farms and studios of award winning artist. For the more adventurerous: kayak on the open water or sail to an unihabited island. When not exploring there will be time for lounging on the deck and enjoying the best views Maine has to offer. Early evening restorative yoga will allow you to pause. Afterwards enjoy a delectable dinner prepared with fresh local ingredients, a real culinary treat. Far away from cell phones, computers and traffic have only the sounds of nature to lull you to sleep.
Tenants HarborTenants Harbor is a tranquil village mid-way down the St. George Peninsula. It's well-protected harbor is home to both fishing boats and pleasure craft. It is also the seat of the St. George town government. Tenants Harbor Lighthouse is on the northeast side of Southern Island at the entrance to Tenants Harbor. In 1934 Tenants Harbor Light was one of a group of Maine lighthouses discontinued by the government and sold at auction. The lighthouse was bought by a Rockland resident and passed through several hands until it was bought in 1978 by artist Andrew Wyeth and his wife Betsy James Wyeth. The Wyeths spent a number of summers on Southern Island and since 1990, Betsy and Andrew's son, artist Jamie Wyeth and his wife Phyllis Mills Wyeth, live on Southern Island and on Barters Point in Tenants Harbor. Tenants Harbor Light has appeared in a number of paintings by Andrew and Jamie Wyeth, including Andrew Wyeth's "Signal Flags" and "Iris at Sea," painted by Jamie Wyeth. Southern Island can be seen from the public landing in the picturesque village of Tenants Harbor, but the lighthouse is best seen by boat. <
